Sean J Morris is back with a brand new EP on Christopher Lawrence’s Pharmacy Records this month with a remix from the hugely talented Jonathan Allyn. Get prepared for a deep pounding progressive ride you won’t forget…
Chances are you might not have heard much from Sean J Morris and if I’m honest neither had I before Pharmacy began to chuck out his tunes. Pharmacy is the home of underground trance legend Christopher Lawrence who has been involved on the scene for well over a decade and worked with the worlds biggest DJs and producers. It took him a while to get the go ahead to set up his own label and it might not have that many releases under its belt, just nine to date so far, it’s has been responsible for some outstanding music. Focusing on unearthing new talent from all over the globe and presenting it to the electronic music world for all to hear. Sean J Morris is one of those new talents, who before Pharmacy, was a very successful film and television music composer. He still is but now he’s turned his attention to trance, the underground variety. He’s based in LA over in the states, which has a great following for the underground sound and with this new release he’s got a two track EP backed up with support from another Pharmacy talent Jonathan Allyn.

Biopsy is the leading track from what is Sean’s second solo appearance on Pharmacy. It’s one that will test the low end on even the biggest of sound systems as Sean has implemented a pounding beat which makes its entrance right at the start. The bass line that feeds in after a short build is deep, very deep. It’s going to really test the speaker that’s for sure. The progressive build up here is a nice piece of work with the melody synth as trancy as you can get, built up with nice pads and fed into the track smoothly, breaking on the tone change with a rolling beat. The break that comes through at the heart of the track creates a cool atmosphere as the synth driven melody starts to build up. He plays around with the beats as it builds up and following a rolling drum that gets louder and breaks it breaks back into the track.
If Sean’s mix is deep then Jonathan Allyn is sharp and punchy with spacey pads and gripping electronic sweeps. The progressive build of the melody is there from the start but the whole tone of it is lighter, the main beat, still pounding but not as deep and adds a crisp kick drum with it. The build knocks out an industrial edge on it that creeps up from nowhere with the backing sound capturing an epic atmosphere. Its building sweeps that lead back into the main beat swoop up on you to drive the aggressive feel with a slight twinkle of uplift. For those who find Sean’s mix a bit to deep then Jonathon’s mix will put it to a tone that should satisfy your needs with. It’s another great remix from this upcoming talent to keep an eye on.
Halo is not a track dedicated to a very popular online console game before you ask, or at least I don’t think it is. It’s one with a very progressive feel to it, much more so that Biopsy as it’s not got a building melody that entices you early in the track and unloads as things progress on. What this track does have is an interesting edge with the percussion side of things. The build is nicely driven with an edge pad and shuffling claps that echo off. The beat breaks off on certain bars emphasising the shuffle that’s hugely addictive. There are two breaks in here that add depth to the progressive flow, sweet melodic crisp electric ripples with short stabs that come at you from nowhere. The hook in here for me comes towards the end of the track with a dominating high end noise that sweeps over the main beat with backing builds to lift it.
Conclusion:
From what I have of Sean J Morris before this must be his best release so far. Biopsy is the track to go for here for those peak time progressive uplifts with Jonathan Allyn offering a lighter mix to Sean’s deep original. Halo would make a nice filler track but not one that sets the world alight for me.
